How to Decorate with White

You may be thinking that white upholstery is harder to keep clean, or that it shows dirt quickly. While these ideas do hold some truth, there are some things to consider when choosing what shade of white and décor you will be using, such as fabric type that will be in the room. In living and family rooms with busy traffic, consider using faux leather and suedes, due to their durable nature. Also, khaki and white denim slipcovers are ideal for homes with pets and active kids. Don’t shy away from white because of the color, but instead use fabrics suitable for your busy home.

In this space, I used a remarkable white sectional sofa, which I was able to consider, because the space was not a high traffic area. Also, I wanted to treat the space as a canvas to showcase the beautiful, rich wood finish of the book shelf and coffee table. With these additional touches, the space is well-groomed and clean, with a monochromatic look.

Layering different shades of whites and textures will create a room that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Using warm whites, light grays, patterns, and varying materials in similar tones will give your space depth and interest. White tones help showcase the wood tones found in furniture, furnishings, and flooring. With so many different shades of white to choose from, many home decorators opt for the shade of white that best suits their client’s lifestyle. For instance, according to Sienna Fantozzi on House Beautiful.com, the shade of white that you choose to use for your room should reflect a certain mood that you are trying to set. Brighter shades of white fit better in a room that is expected to feel open and inviting, as opposed to darker shades of white that give off the feeling of relaxation. Incorporating white furniture with dark accents is always an option when decorating a room. This helps to give a certain boldness to any room that is likely to draw attention. These accents can be in the form of decorations, furniture, drapes, and carpeting; however, adding in an accent wall can always help to add depth to any room, and bring out the shade of white that you have chosen. Dark and light color combinations are endless, and allow for the decorator to show off their individual taste.

A quick search on the internet would prove that there are hundreds of shades of white, and all of them do not look like different versions of beige! In fact, everything in the color spectrum has a white version of it. From pinks and yellows, to greens and purples, there are underlying hues of color in a variety of whites. Take for instance, White Heron paint by Benjamin Moore, which gives off a cozy feeling with its hint of grey that is slightly noticeable. Another important concept when choosing your preferred shade of white is to read the description and qualities associated with that particular shade. It can be very insightful when trying to create a certain ambiance for the room it will be placed in. A color with a calming name and description is more likely to be placed in a room for relaxation; whereas a color with an exciting name might be used in a room filled with energy and activity. With so many different shades of white to choose from, one is sure to find the right shade for their personality and style without having to turn to drastic colors.
